About the event

The violence against women is a global crisis compounded and complicated by other crises. In 2020, following the outbreak of COVID- 19, the UN relaunched a call for the establishment of femicide watches to collect and analyse data on gender-related killings of women to identify gaps in the criminal justice and criminal procedures systems. Spain stands out as the first European country that gathers data on different types of femicide as the first step to tackle the problem. UN Women and Spain co-hosted this event to increase awareness and foster commitments among state parties toward the establishment of femicide watches.
