Side Event: Effects of the Invasion of Ukraine on the SDG Implementation in the UNECE Region (EN/RU)
At this event, experts from international organizations and civil society representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus will discuss how the invasion of Ukraine influenced the SDG implementation in the UNECE region and their countries, and what kind of joint actions could end Russia's aggression against Ukraine and how the UNECE region could return to the progress path to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
Background
Within two years, progress on the SDGs has been slowed due to COVID-19. In 2022, Russian Federation began an invasion of Ukraine, which affected progress on the SDGs in the UNECE region even more. First of all, military actions affect the SDG implementation in Ukraine, as the Russian Federation is destroying not only the infrastructure of Ukraine but also affecting its economic situation and the loss of human capital. Nevertheless, the progress on the SDG implementation has also stopped in Russia itself as shown in the civil society report on the SDG implementation released in March 2023. Moreover, the effects of the invasion impact the entire UNECE region and the world.
